Dhanatrayodasi

Dhanatrayodasi comes before Naraka chaturdasi and Deepavali. We light the lamps from 'trayodasi' onwards. This is the day on which we perform 'Dhana Puja'. On this day we light lamp to remove accidental fatalities in our lives for which we pray to Dharmaraju as follows:

yamaaya dharmaraajaaya mrutyuvae chanattakaya cha
oudambaraya dadhya niilaaya paramaeshtinae||

We light the lamps on the Souther corner of the house, we believe to be lighting the way back to the heavens.
